About Dr Jon Cornelissen

Dr Jon Cornelissen is a dedicated Orthopaedic Surgeon who recently joined the team at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career. His particular interests include general orthopaedics, in particular lower limb surgery, with international training in foot and ankle surgery.
Born and raised in a small farming community on the West Coast of South Africa, Dr Cornelissen's started his academic journey after matriculating at Hoërskool Lutzville with a year of Mechatronic Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch, a path inspired by his father's engineering background and his own interest in the mechanics of life. However, he soon realised that his true calling lay in the medical field, leading him to switch to a medical degree at the same university, where he graduated with an MBChB in 2011.

His professional experience ranges across the South African provinces, beginning with an internship at several hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal in 2012-13, followed by a year of community service at Wentworth Hospital. Dr Cornelissen then honed his skills as a Medical Officer in Orthopaedics at Frere Hospital in East London, where he gained valuable experience in orthopaedic trauma, arthroplasty, and paediatric orthopaedics.

In 2019, Dr Cornelissen embarked on a Registrar position at the Stellenbosch University-affiliated Tygerberg Hospital’s Orthopaedic Department, further specialising in his field. Notable achievements of Dr Cornelissen's postgraduate training include passing the College of Surgeons of South Africa (FCS(SA)) Primary Examinations in 2015 and earning the Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa (FC Orth (SA)) intermediate with the highest mark in 2017. He again achieved the highest mark with his MMed in Orthopaedic Pathology at Stellenbosch University in 2020, ultimately culminating in him finishing his Orthopaedic Specialisation (FC Orth (SA)), Cum Laude.

His commitment to advancing orthopaedic surgery is evident in his research contributions, in which he obtained the Discovery Clinical Excellence Award, the G.T. du Toit Award and the Advanced Orthopaedic Training Centre Best Research Award.

The culmination of Dr Cornelissen's training was his fellowship in London, UK at the Barts Health NHS Trust (Royal London Hospital and Barts Health Orthopaedics Centre), focusing on orthopaedic trauma and foot and ankle surgery with Mr Lucky Jeyaseelan.

This experience at one of Europe’s busiest trauma centres and the UKs biggest NHS trust not only expanded his trauma and elective experience but prepared him for the next chapter of his career at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt. He views the move as not just a career advancement, but also an opportunity to make a greater impact in the field, while working alongside internationally prominent foot and ankle specialists transitioning into one of their practices.

Outside of his professional life, Dr Cornelissen is a family man, married with two young children. He is an avid braai master, enjoying a glass of wine on the “stoep” and is often found running the streets of Welgemoed, up a mountain or on the water in his paddleski when he has a free moment, balancing a busy career and family.
